Mooring operations is one of the most dangerous tasks for crew and port workers. Because the mooring lines moving at speeds exceeding 220m/s when it is snapping. Accidents caused by snap back accouts for 53% of all the mooring accidents. It is time to use the anti snap back mooring lines.
What is the reason of anti snap back ?
The key factor is the elongation. The elongation will compenste for the power cause by different movements of a vessel during mooring operations resulting from wind, swell and tides among other factors.
When a rope elongates, it behaves like a rubber strip, and will store energy in the form of elastic potential energy. The more tension is applied to the rope, the higher is that potential energy. If a heavily loaded rope snaps, that potential energy will be released in the form of heat and kinetic energy, and the broken section would travel on a random trajectory at high velocity. This phenomenon is often referred to as Snap-Back, and the combination of high speed and randomness makes it extremely dangerous.
How to take off the potential energy of the mooring lines cased by the big wind, swell and tides?
The key point is to add a more elasitc rope in the middle of mooring line. This rope can not bear the load during the normal rope operation. When the load of the mooring line is too big to bear, the mooring line breaks. At the same time, the central core is not break because of its more elastic performance. As the guideline of the central core, the breaked mooring line couldn’t swing around.
This will also help prevent accidents for crew members when the mooring rope breaks.
